Uganda’s anti-LGBTQ legislation, according to Google, is “a concern for global businesses and investors operating there or wanting to invest.”
The statement from Open for Business Coalition further says, “The legislation, which prescribes the death penalty or life imprisonment for some homosexual offenses, would hurt Uganda’s economy. Diversity and inclusion are core principles of our coalition partners in the conduct of their businesses.”

Recently, the Ugandan parliament passed strict anti-Gay legislation that targets the LGBT section (Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Bisexual community) and anyone who supports and defends their human rights, endangering those rights.
The Open For Business partnership also includes organizations including Microsoft, MasterCard, HSBC, Facebook owner Meta, and Google.
Widespread support for the law exists in Uganda, especially among church leaders. However, robust economies in the world are obviously against the bill. In addition, the United States has warned Uganda about economic consequences if the bill becomes law.

“the imposition of the death penalty based on such legislation is per se an arbitrary killing and a breach of article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Furthermore, the imposition of the death penalty for same-sex intimacy – including “serial homosexuality”– is an egregious violation of human rights,” says the UN.
The final decision on the bill should be taken in another 30 days. The world is eager to learn the next steps taken by the president of Uganda.
